Locally Grown Produce for the Food Bank of Iowa

The Iowa Gardening for Good has a project focusing on involving volunteers in raising fresh produce for the Food Bank of Iowa and various food pantries.

The "gardening" location is Near Madrid Iowa which is roughly between Ames and Des Moines Iowa.  At that location there are several acres of vegetables produced with the sole purpose of dontating to the Food Bank of Iowa.  There is not other vegetable production for commercial purposes.

The primary labor source is volunteers coordinated throught the Food Bank of Iowa.  Throughout the growing season, dates are set for volunteers to come help plant, tie up or pick the produce.  Some companies like Walmart, Farm Credit Services, Principal Financial, and Nationwide Insurance have organized dates and paid volunteer time for their employees.  Families, college students and many other individuals have also participated.
